Die Demonstrationen, die nach dem Rücktritt von Präsident Mubarak im Februar 2011 kurzzeitig abgeklungen war, gewannen im Vorfeld der Parlamentswahlen wieder an Dynamik. Der in Kairo und Paris lebende Aalam Wassef (41) hat die Ereignisse in Ägypten aus nächster Nähe beobachtet und auf seinem Blog kommentiert. Oliver Lerone Schultz traf den Medienkünstler und Betreiber der Plattform Peerevaluation.org Mitte November 2011 im Post-Media Lab in Lüneburg zum Interview. -

Mitte September 2011 besetzten ein paar Hundert Demonstranten unter dem Slogan „Occupy Wall Street!“ den Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan und benannten ihn in „Liberty Square“ um. Damit war der Startschuss für die sogenannte Occupy-Bewegung gefallen, welche zu einem bestimmenden Thema öffentlicher Debatten im letzten Drittel des Jahres 2011 werden sollte.
